I've had my fill of Alex Ovechkin.  As if it wasn't bad enough putting up with the hype generated for hype's sake over this series, we also have to keep being reminded that Alex also obscured Malkin in Russia.

Since I'm only getting back into hockey after an absence of many years, I will tell you that for some bizarre reason last season my roomie Lin took quite an interest in King Alex.  Her brother lives in DC and helped feed that interest with tee shirts and articles.  Yeah, they just love him down there...maybe b/c their team has been so bad for so long--hence the nickname the HandiCaps--that they think he's going to save them single-handedly.  Then there was this year's All-Star game and...ugh...what a hotdog! (ketchup or mustard on that?)

Which brings us to this series and how the press seemed to be backing Ovechkin, pooh-poohing Crosby and plain old forgetting Malkin even existed.  Once the series started, I saw very quickly what sort of player Alex is--I think the word is...GOON?  I saw no finesse, I just saw this ape crashing around on skates slamming slapshots any time the puck was anywhere near him.  Note that I mentioned crashing around?  I see how players hit, then I saw how HE hits, with that running jump. And the whole Gonchar affair??  Uncalled for!  Yes, Ovie can score, I will grant him that.  But I just saw Ovie being shut down like he was some junior player trying to play in the big leagues.  I saw the PENGUINS shut him down to the point where he'd get all of 2 shots on goal.  And you know what else I saw?  Nothing.  If he wasn't lurking by the net, I did not see him at all; he was invisible!

Yes, I am a Pens fan and yes, I am prejudiced but I happen to think that Sid Crosby's class and skills said more than any of us or all of us could say.  He never gave up, he never backed down, his temper rarely flared.  he let his goals, his assists and his skating speak for him.  As Gonch said, the best revenge is to win.  I haven't gone around reading what the supposedly hockey educated pundits are saying the day after, but last night I felt like the Pens, and especially Sid, had made quite the statement without uttering a word.  The Pens were playing like men possessed, and Sid led the pack with his grit and hard work.  At one point I was sitting in amazed silence just gaping at the TV screen.  Who were we playing again?  Had they even shown up for the game??

As far as I'm concerned there never was any battle; it was all manufactured for TV ratings and to sell newspapers and magazines.  Alex Ovechkin the best??  Not even close!!  Now can we just get on with the games and let Sid's work do the talking???  Bye bye Alex, you were elimin_8_ed!!!

Well put both Deb and Tracie. Smiley

Thanks, I'm just soo tired of the comparison, b/c in my mind there is NONE!  the hype was so fabricated and I was so proud of Sid for just ignorig it and letting his game speak for him.  I admire that about the whole team.

The one thing about AO that annoys me, is just how arrogant that S.O.B comes off as.

He's a good player. And he wants you to know that he's a good player by telling you how good he is. Sid and Geno are good players, but they are more classy about it.

Geno always calls Sid the best player. Sid will call Geno the best player.

Neither one of them are like 'Oh yeah, I know.. I am the best player.' Their actions speak louder than words. That to me is true leadership.

My husband gets Maxim magazine, and there was an article awhile back with Ovie. I wanted to punch him in the face just by reading the article. Ugh..

I thought the sid ovi battle colud of been a little better.  it would have been nice to see them get in a fight or a little battle.  but as for the series couldn't ask for anything more. sid played his best hockey i have seen all season. he never backed down from a chance to score a goal. but for alex after that hit on gonch, he seemed like he didn't even care about the series any more. sidney=3rd round alex=trip back home:)

I'm glad it didn't come down to a fight.  I've never been a fan of fighting b/c it detracts so from the skating and the skills, and when I think of Sid Crosby I think of a guy who speaks MUCH louder with his skills.  I think that's the one thing I really like about the Pens--they don't trash talk, they let the scoreline do the talking. Sid cuold have bene just as obnoxious as Ovie inthis series but instead...hey, sports writers, who's team moved on to the next level, eh???

I know what u guys are saying with the obnoxious and stuff.  I used to be a fan of his (*gasp*) but then I saw an interview with him on YouTube, and OMG!  He was SO annoying.  he was like "I drive my cars 180 MPH in the city, and I broke an axle on one doing a donut "  I was like holy crap dude!  He said he doesn't care that its dangerous or anything.  That was when I really started disliking him.

Yeah...Ovechkin is a maverick.  He, unlike Sidney, is a one man show on his team.  I heard the announcers say that they felt like Ovechkin would wear the 'C' on his jersey some day, and he probably will, however, he's not a true leader.  A true leader will make those around you better.  Sid does just that.  You look at Ovechkins points for this year, and although an impressive total, the majority of them are goals.  He does have some assists, but he's the main scorer on the team.  When he's on the ice i don't see a line...i see Ovi and a couple other guys out there that feed him the puck.  I don't see someone who is out there to pass and give his line mates scoring opportunities...i see someone who thinks they are the man and that they can do it all themselves.  Honestly, hockey is one of the few 'pure' sports still where most of the men play the game because they truly love it.  I hate pro basketball and football (for the most part) and even pro baseball because it's all about 'one man' and his skills.  What about the beauty of the sport as a team?  Who cares that one man is incredible...i want to see a team sport.  If i wanted to see an individual sport i'd watch chess or something.  LOL.

At any rate, i went off on a bit of a rabbit trail there, but you get the point.  Sidney makes his line mates better period!  They all look up to him and respect him and he respects others.  You won't catch him trash talking other players or talking about how wonderful he is.  You WILL, however, catch him talking about how he was lucky to be in the right place at the right time...and how his line mates gave him a great pass and that he was lucky enough to bang the puck home.  That, my friends, is true leadership.
